Do you want to know why I use a knife? Guns are too quick. You can’t savor all the…little emotions. In…you see, in their last moments, people show you who they really are. So in a way, I know your friends better than you ever did. Would you like to know which of them were cowards?

THE JOKER: To them you’re just a freak, like me. They need you right now…but when they don’t, they’ll cast you out like a leper. You see, their morals—their code—it’s a bad joke, dropped at the first sign of trouble. They’re only as good as the world allows them to be. I’ll show you. When the chips are down, these, uh, these civilized people…they’ll eat each other. See, I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.

My favorite scene from The Dark Knight, suggested by Jen!

Yeah, extraordinary. Full of life, a lustful life and energy which was contagious, infectious in a really good way. And inspiring to everyone, he kind of.. I mean, look at the reaction, look at the insane reaction after he was snatched away. It let people that never met him, people that touched through his work, people that he touched because of friendships, because of whatever.. he was just a force of nature. And to be in the presence, and I think I could speak for us and say that we were lucky to have met him and to have been in a creative situation with him. Yeah, he was, you know, he was the man.

First of all, I have to say this is ever so humbling. Being amongst among such wonderful people in a wonderful industry. Firstly, we’d like to thank the Academy for recognizing our son’s amazing work. Warner Brothers and Christopher Nolan in particular, for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character. To Steve Alexender, Heath’s mentor, special friend and agent for 10 years, we love you Steve. This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath’s quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here, his peers within an industry he so loved. Thank you.— Kim Ledger
Heath was such a compassionate and generous soul who added so much excitement and inspiration to our lives. We have been truly overwhelmed by the honor and respect being bestowed upon him with this award. Tonight we are choosing to celebrate and be happy for what he has achieved.—Sally Bell
Heath, we both knew what you created in the Joker was extraordinarily special and had even talked about being here on this very day. We really wish you were, but we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful Matilda.—Kate Ledger

Heath Ledger’s Family accepting the Oscar for him.

“The Joker is a psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy…. Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night. I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going,”
